The Conquistadores were flanking him, and Roxton knew he had to get creative, to survive. This is when he began treating the Spanish like he would a Raptor, or a T-Rex. While Roxton could not help feeling like a coward, for each time that he had ducked into a cave, to save the expedition, this was one more time when he wished he had packed more ammo. Still, in the darkness, of a cave, Roxton knew that few predators would follow. This is why, while he KNEW the Spanish were surrounding him, he spotted a cave, and headed for it.
